How do I block SPAM email in Outlook Express?

Outlook Express is not user friendly when it comes time to block spam. You can configure OE to look for telltale words and phrases that identify an email as probable spam and then have the email moved to a special folder or deleted outright. You do this by creating special "rules" that identify those probable spam words.

1. In Outlook Express, click Tools.

2. Click Message Rules.

3. Click Mail. (The "New Mail Rule" dialog box opens.)

4. Click a condition that you want to apply to test the incoming email.

5. Click the link in the Rule Description box.

6. Type the word or phrase.

7. Click Add (NOTE: Repeat Steps 6 %26amp; 7 for each word or phrase you want to identify as possible spam.)

8. Click OK (NOTE: You can specify multiple conditions for a rule by repeating Steps 4 to 8.)

9. Click an action that you want to take for any email that meets your condition.

10. Click the link in the Rule Description box.

11. Click the folder. (You can click New Folder to create a folder.)

12. Click OK.

13. Type a name for the rule.

14. Click OK. (The Message Rules dialog box opens.)

15. Click OK (Outlook places spam email in the folder you specified.)

After you create the first rule, clicking the Mail command (Step 3) takes you directly to the Message Rules dialog box. To create a rule from there, click the Mail Rules tab and then click New.

As I said, it is NOT user friendly.

You can see what spam-identifying words and phrases appear in the spam emails you actually receive. In addition to those words and phrases you can look for these in the Subject line or message body: 18+, adult, adv, casino, credit rating, debts, dieting, diploma, double your money, email marketing, erotic, free phone, free trial, free vacation, free!, get out of debt, giveaway, guaranteed!, hair loss, hormone, increase your sales, incredible opportunity, lose weight, maximize your income, millionaire, over 18, over 21, reach millions, secure your future, sex, thinning hair, too good to be true, urgent notice, Viagra, work at home, XXX, you are a winner. Unfortunately, most spammers are now wise to how Outlook Express identifies spam so they don't use these common spellings anymore. Example: you identify "viagra" but this "冶蠆岷┠E椕?quot; gets through. That's why a lot of people are spending money to block spam with challenge / response software like spamarrest. Hope this helps.
